Sending the safeguards Agreement to the IAEA

The "haste" in sending the deal to the IAEA was probably a stunt of
the UPA government to vindicate itself of the accusations of being a
lame duck government. It was a politically unsound decision leave
aside the actual impact on the country. The benefits of the deal were
not resounded properly even when eminent mavericks like former
president Abdul Kalam and Mr. Narayanan supported the deal-owing to
whatever reasons, Had it publicized the benefits well and then had
moved ahead defying the left parties it would have been a heroic act,
as of now it appears to be a mindless, action fueled by stubbornness.
The entire "political stunt" will come down heavily on the ruling
party and no doubt if UPA looses the next Lok Sabha election this
would be one of the major factors.
